Placed-based information
That's a clumsy title, but I am really intriqued by the geographic/local layer of meaning as you try to understand and take action in the world. I am doing that on this project, and we are doing it on the Anglican Malaria Project. Along the lines of placing meaning, I really liked a post by Adina Levin on categories and meaning.
Her insight completely jives with what we're finding in Mozambique as we try to knit together all the groups working to fight malaria; the meaning is deep, cultural, tribal, related to power and money and perceptions of scarcity . And you have to understand individuals' and organizations' belief in what will work, what won't and why, who wants them to win, who wants them to be weaker and why. The complexity is overwhelming at times, until a new, higher order pattern becomes clear with more information. i hope that happens on my trip there with our malariologist in early March.
For me, at this point, place is a placeholder for meaning; a strange attractor around which the vortex of my understanding swirls. I just had brunch at the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena, but I am down here for my quarterly two days of multicultural peer supervsion with a group that lincludes a Latina NGO exec, a black academic, church folks and people from healthcare, with me as the sometimes too-bold entrepreneur in the mix. Overhearing the priveleged talk about the difficulty of getting their kids in a good college due to the influx of foreign students who sometimes don't speak English very well and are actually crowding out white anglo saxon Protestants was pretty amazing. What was unusual was that usually in California, racism is not usually so transparently displayed. But I guess the fact that they were a big group in a protected corner table in a haven of luxury made them more willing to speak the truth to each other.
